The 1911 Census recorded 285 people named Esler in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 134 men and 151 women.

The Eslers were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 86.3% of them (246 people). Next came Down (29), Derry (6), Dublin (2) and Carlow (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Eslers whose literacy was recorded, 83.8% could both read and write, 1.5% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.4%), general labourer (4.6%), textile worker (4.6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.2% of all Eslers, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Esler?
Most Eslers, 67.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (18.6%), Anglican (6%), Baptist (2.8%) and Unitarian (2.5%).
