The 1911 Census recorded 586 people named Ewing in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,500 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 310 men and 275 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Donegal was Ewing country: 25.3% of them (148 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (137), Down (99), Tyrone (79) and Derry (54).

The average Ewing in 1911 was 28.6 years old, 27.4 for men and 30.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ewing literacy in 1911
Of the Ewings whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.2% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Ewing common first names
The most common male names were Robert (30), James, William, Thomas and John. For women it was Elizabeth (22), followed by Mary, Annie, Lizzie and Margaret.
Ewing occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an Ewing's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (118) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.4%), textile worker (3.6%), farm labourer (2.7%) and general labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Ewings, followed by textiles & clothing, metal & engineering and domestic service.
What religion is Ewing?
The largest religious group among Ewings was Presbyterian, at 41.1%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.7%), Roman Catholic (10.1%), Methodist (9.4%) and Moravian (1.5%).
