The 1911 Census recorded 2,451 people named Fahy in Ireland, about 0.056% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 360th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,253 men and 1,196 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Fahy in Ireland
The Fahys were heavily concentrated in Galway, home to 65.7% of them (1,611 people). Next came Clare (139), Mayo (120), Cork (115) and Roscommon (83).

The average Fahy in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 30.8 for men and 29.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fahy literacy in 1911
Of the Fahys whose literacy was recorded, 74% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 21.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (195), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (249), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Kate and Ellen.

The most common occupation among Fahys was farmer, 24.3% of them (596 people). Next came scholar / student (22.2%), general labourer (3.2%), farm labourer (3%) and domestic servant (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.1% of all Fahys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Fahy?
Fahys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.4%).
