That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fannin literacy in 1911
Of the Fannins whose literacy was recorded, 87.3% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 10.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.5% reading and writing against 83.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (10), William, Patrick, Robert and James. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Sarah, Lizzie, Kate and Mary Jane.
Fannin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Fannin's census form was "Scholar"; 23.5% (31) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.2%), textile worker (3.8%), other maker / factory worker (3%) and domestic servant (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Fannins, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Fannin?
The largest religious group among Fannins was Roman Catholic, at 46.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (42.4%), Methodist (5.3%), Non-Conformist (5.3%) and Presbyterian (0.8%).
