Fannon in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 232 people named Fannon in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 122 men and 109 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Fannon in Ireland
The Fannons were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 54.7% of them (127 people). Next came Galway (58), Armagh (14), Cavan (14) and Limerick (4).
Fannon average age in 1911
The average Fannon in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 32.4 for men and 28.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fannon literacy in 1911
Of the Fannons whose literacy was recorded, 76.4% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Fannon common first names
The most common male names were John (23), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Katie and Lizzie.
Fannon occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Fannon's census form was "Scholar"; 24.6% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.7%), farm labourer (7.3%), general labourer (4.3%) and textile worker (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.1% of all Fannons, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Fannon?
Fannons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.2%).
