The 1911 Census recorded 706 people named Farren in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 374 men and 332 women.

The Farrens were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 59.5% of them (420 people). Next came Derry (150), Dublin (95), Antrim (13) and Cork (13).

The average Farren in 1911 was 28.9 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Farren literacy in 1911
Of the Farrens whose literacy was recorded, 70.7% could both read and write, 6.3% could read but not write, and 23% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 72.2% reading and writing against 69.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Farren common first names
The most common male names were John (51), Patrick, James, Michael and William. For women it was Mary (45), followed by Ellen, Catherine, Bridget and Rose.
Farren occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Farren's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (153) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.3%), farm labourer (3.3%), general labourer (2.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21% of all Farrens, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is Farren?
Farrens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.7%) and Presbyterian (2.4%).
