The 1911 Census recorded 811 people named Fee in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 392 men and 419 women.
Counties with Fee in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Fees, 17% (138 people). Next came Down (128), Leitrim (110), Cavan (87) and Fermanagh (83).
Fee average age in 1911
The average Fee in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 32.1 for men and 30.8 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fee literacy in 1911
Of the Fees whose literacy was recorded, 76.3% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.7% reading and writing against 75.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Fee common first names
The most common male names were John (68), James, Patrick, Thomas and Peter. For women it was Mary (38), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Sarah and Annie.
Fee occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Fees was farmer, 21% of them (170 people). Next came scholar / student (16.3%), farm labourer (4.6%), general labourer (3.9%) and textile worker (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.9% of all Fees, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Fee?
Most Fees, 59.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (19.1%), Presbyterian (19%) and Methodist (2.1%).
