Fegan in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 1,170 people named Fegan in Ireland, about 0.027% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 700th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 564 men and 604 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Fegan in Ireland
Down was Fegan country: 27.4% of them (321 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (205), Armagh (178), Cavan (117) and Antrim (90).
Fegan average age in 1911
The average Fegan in 1911 was 31.1 years old, 30.2 for men and 32.1 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fegan literacy in 1911
Of the Fegans whose literacy was recorded, 74.9% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 19.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 71.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Fegan common first names
The most common male names were John (76), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (78), followed by Annie, Bridget, Catherine and Ellen.
Fegan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Fegan's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (223) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.2%), farm labourer (4%), textile worker (2.9%) and domestic servant (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.8% of all Fegans, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Fegan?
Fegans were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (7.9%), Presbyterian (2.1%), Non-Conformist (0.4%) and Baptist (0.1%).
