Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.4% of all Fergies, followed by building & construction, metal & engineering and agriculture.

Fergies were predominantly Presbyterian (84.9%). The remainder were mostly Congregationalist (11.3%), Anglican (1.9%) and Baptist (1.9%).
