The 1911 Census recorded 418 people named Finan in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 231 men to 186 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Finans were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 53.8% of them (225 people). Next came Sligo (153), Galway (6), Offaly (6) and Westmeath (6).

The average Finan in 1911 was 31.7 years old, 30.6 for men and 33.1 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Finan literacy in 1911
Of the Finans whose literacy was recorded, 75.1% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 22% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 76.8% reading and writing against 73.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (36), John, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (30), followed by Mary, Margaret, Kate and Mary Kate.
Finan occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Finans was farmer, 25.4% of them (106 people). Next came scholar / student (22.2%), farm labourer (4.1%), general labourer (2.2%) and teacher (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 30.4% of all Finans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and professional.
