Finlan literacy in 1911
Of the Finlans whose literacy was recorded, 75.4% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 22.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.8% reading and writing against 66.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14%), general labourer (10.5%), dressmaker / milliner (3.5%) and clerk / office worker (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Finlans, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and clerical & administration.
