The 1911 Census recorded 2,279 people named Finnegan in Ireland, about 0.052% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 388th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,121 men and 1,156 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Finnegan in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Finnegans, 10.9% (249 people). Next came Monaghan (246), Galway (207), Meath (146) and Cavan (145).
Finnegan average age in 1911
The average Finnegan in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 30.2 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Finnegan literacy in 1911
Of the Finnegans whose literacy was recorded, 76% could both read and write, 5% could read but not write, and 18.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Finnegan common first names
The most common male names were John (169), Patrick, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (181), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Annie.
Finnegan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Finnegan's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (458) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.9%), general labourer (4.7%), farm labourer (3.6%) and domestic servant (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.5% of all Finnegans, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Finnegan?
Finnegans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.8%), Presbyterian (0.9%) and Methodist (0.3%).
