Finnigan literacy in 1911
Of the Finnigans whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 19% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (33), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (36), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Annie and Elizabeth.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.6%), general labourer (5.2%), textile worker (4.7%) and domestic servant (4.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.5% of all Finnigans, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Finnigans were predominantly Roman Catholic (89.2%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.5%) and Presbyterian (2.2%).
