The 1911 Census recorded 477 people named Flemming in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 242 men and 234 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Galway had the largest share of Flemmings, 11.1% (53 people). Next came Dublin (49), Tipperary (39), Sligo (33) and Mayo (30).

The average Flemming in 1911 was 32.6 years old, 31.1 for men and 34.2 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Flemming literacy in 1911
Of the Flemmings whose literacy was recorded, 70.6% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 24.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Flemming common first names
The most common male names were John (45), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (35), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Catherine.
Flemming occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Flemming's census form was "Scholar"; 20.8% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14%), general labourer (6.5%), farm labourer (5%) and domestic servant (4.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.5% of all Flemmings, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Flemming?
Flemmings were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8%), Presbyterian (4%), Plymouth Brethren (0.4%) and Baptist (0.2%).
