The 1911 Census recorded 2,925 people named Flood in Ireland, about 0.067% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 303rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,498 men and 1,426 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Flood country: 27.6% of them (808 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cavan (290), Meath (274), Kildare (234) and Wexford (151).

The average Flood in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 28.7 for men and 29.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Flood literacy in 1911
Of the Floods whose literacy was recorded, 78.2% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 18% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (189), John, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (218), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Annie.
Flood occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Flood's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (619) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.6%), general labourer (4.3%), farm labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.6% of all Floods, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Flood?
Floods were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.2%), Presbyterian (0.9%), Methodist (0.1%) and Baptist (0.1%).
