Foran in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 924 people named Foran in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 479 men and 445 women.
Counties with Foran in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Forans, 24.6% (227 people). Next came Kerry (132), Waterford (89), Kildare (70) and Offaly (70).
Foran average age in 1911
The average Foran in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 29.9 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Foran literacy in 1911
Of the Forans whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 16.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Foran common first names
The most common male names were John (79), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (89), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Catherine and Margaret.
Foran occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Foran's census form was "Scholar"; 19.6% (181) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.9%), general labourer (7.7%), farm labourer (6.9%) and domestic servant (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.6% of all Forans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Foran?
Forans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.2%) and No Religion (0.2%).
