Forbes in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 924 people named Forbes in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 435 men and 488 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Forbes in Ireland
Tyrone had the largest share of Forbeses, 17.7% (164 people). Next came Antrim (162), Cork (133), Armagh (81) and Dublin (61).

Forbes average age in 1911
The average Forbes in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 28.9 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Forbes literacy in 1911
Of the Forbeses whose literacy was recorded, 80.9% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 14.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.1% reading and writing against 79.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Forbes common first names
The most common male names were John (56), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (41), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Annie and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Forbes's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (191) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.3%), farm labourer (4.2%), general labourer (3.6%) and textile worker (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.7% of all Forbeses, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
