Ford in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 661 people named Ford in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 309 men and 349 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Ford in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Fords, 21.8% (144 people). Next came Cork (91), Galway (55), Fermanagh (36) and Armagh (27).
Ford average age in 1911
The average Ford in 1911 was 31.9 years old, 31.3 for men and 32.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ford literacy in 1911
Of the Fords whose literacy was recorded, 82.3% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 14.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.4% reading and writing against 81% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Ford common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (27), John, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (46), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Annie and Margaret.
Ford occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Ford's census form was "Scholar"; 16.2% (107) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), general labourer (4.8%), domestic servant (4.2%) and farm labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Fords, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Ford?
Most Fords, 68.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (22.7%), Methodist (3.8%), Presbyterian (3.6%) and Non-Conformist (0.3%).
