Men came out slightly ahead, 84.6% reading and writing against 73.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.2%), farm labourer (4.6%), railway / tram worker (3.1%) and domestic servant (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.4% of all Foxtons, followed by domestic service, transport and building & construction.

Foxtons were overwhelmingly Anglican, 93.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (6.2%).
