The 1911 Census recorded 67 people named Foyle in Ireland; roughly one in every 66,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 35 men and 32 women.

The Foyles were heavily concentrated in Laois, home to 79.1% of them (53 people). Next came Kildare (4), Waterford (2), Westmeath (2) and Down (1).

The average Foyle in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 31.2 for men and 28.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Foyle literacy in 1911
Of the Foyles whose literacy was recorded, 91.7% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 96.3% reading and writing against 87.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Patrick, James, William and Edward. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Bridget, Kate, Margaret and Alice.

The most common occupation among Foyles was farmer, 23.9% of them (16 people). Next came scholar / student (7.5%), general labourer (6%), farm labourer (4.5%) and agent / manager (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 29.9% of all Foyles, followed by general labourers, building & construction and domestic service.
What religion is Foyle?
Foyles were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.5%).
