The 1911 Census recorded 291 people named Gallivan in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 152 men and 138 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Gallivans were heavily concentrated in Kerry, home to 54% of them (157 people). Next came Cork (66), Limerick (16), Waterford (12) and Antrim (11).

The average Gallivan in 1911 was 29.9 years old, 29.1 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gallivan literacy in 1911
Of the Gallivans whose literacy was recorded, 75.3% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 21.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.3% reading and writing against 73.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (23), Michael, James, Patrick and Jeremiah. For women it was Mary (25), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Julia and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Gallivan's census form was "Scholar"; 27.1% (79) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.1%), general labourer (4.8%), farm labourer (3.4%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Gallivans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
