Limerick was Gammell country: 29.4% of them (15 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Wicklow (13), Kildare (9), Meath (7) and Westmeath (4).

The average Gammell in 1911 was 21.4 years old, 20.0 for men and 24.1 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gammell literacy in 1911
Of the Gammells whose literacy was recorded, 66% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 31.9% could do neither. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gammell common first names
The most common male names were James (6), Edward, George, John and Philip. For women it was Bridget (3), followed by Ellen, Mary, Annie and Evelyn.
Gammell occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gammell's census form was "Scholar"; 27.5% (14) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (7.8%), general labourer (5.9%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.9%) and farm labourer (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 7.8% of all Gammells, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Gammell?
Gammells were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (2%).
