The 1911 Census recorded 324 people named Gara in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 160 men and 164 women.

The Garas were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 56.8% of them (184 people). Next came Donegal (116), Mayo (20), Sligo (3) and Galway (1).

The average Gara in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 27.2 for men and 31.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gara literacy in 1911
Of the Garas whose literacy was recorded, 69.7% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 25.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (39), James, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (30), followed by Mary, Kate, Anne and Maggie.

The most common occupation among Garas was farmer, 29.3% of them (95 people). Next came scholar / student (23.5%), farm labourer (1.5%), domestic servant (1.2%) and dressmaker / milliner (0.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.2% of all Garas, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and building & construction.
