The 1911 Census recorded 429 people named Gargan in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 209 men and 219 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Cavan was Gargan country: 33.8% of them (145 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Meath (120), Louth (58), Dublin (51) and Cork (12).

The average Gargan in 1911 was 32.0 years old, 32.4 for men and 31.7 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gargan literacy in 1911
Of the Gargans whose literacy was recorded, 79.6% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 78.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (37), John, Michael, James and Philip. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Bridget, Kate, Margaret and Rose.

The most common entry on a Gargan's census form was "Scholar"; 17.9% (77) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14%), general labourer (5.6%), farm labourer (5.4%) and herd / dairy worker (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.7% of all Gargans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Gargan?
Gargans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.6%).
