That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gash literacy in 1911
Of the Gashes whose literacy was recorded, 92.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 7.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 93.5% reading and writing against 90.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), William, Richard, Benjamin and Frederick. For women it was Anne (2), followed by Mary, Susan, Susanna and Ada Kathleen.

The most common occupation among Gashes was farmer, 25% of them (14 people). Next came clerk / office worker (3.6%), scholar / student (3.6%), carter / driver / groom (1.8%) and maid (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25% of all Gashes, followed by clerical & administration, professional and domestic service.

Gashes were overwhelmingly Anglican, 96.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (3.6%).
