Of the Gastons whose literacy was recorded, 89.5% could both read and write, 1.5% could read but not write, and 8.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.2% reading and writing against 86.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Gaston's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (75) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.8%), textile worker (4%), dressmaker / milliner (3.7%) and general labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.2% of all Gastons, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Gaston?
Gastons were predominantly Presbyterian (77.5%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.5%), Plymouth Brethren (4%), Baptist (2.3%) and Methodist (1.1%).
