The 1911 Census recorded 330 people named Gately in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 184 men to 146 women.

The Gatelys were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 76.4% of them (252 people). Next came Galway (43), Dublin (18), Westmeath (9) and Offaly (2).

The average Gately in 1911 was 34.3 years old, 35.6 for men and 32.7 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gately literacy in 1911
Of the Gatelys whose literacy was recorded, 77.9% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.3% reading and writing against 76.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (42), Thomas, Patrick, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Bridget (30), followed by Mary, Catherine, Margaret and Delia.

The most common occupation among Gatelys was farmer, 37.3% of them (123 people). Next came scholar / student (20.3%), farm labourer (3.3%), domestic servant (2.4%) and general labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 41.5% of all Gatelys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and professional.

Gatelys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.6%).
