Gaughran literacy in 1911
Of the Gaughrans whose literacy was recorded, 70.3% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 25.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 71.7% reading and writing against 68.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Gaughran's census form was "Scholar"; 26.2% (50) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), general labourer (7.3%), domestic servant (2.6%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.2% of all Gaughrans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
