The 1911 Census recorded 341 people named Gavan in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 181 men and 159 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo was Gavan country: 30.2% of them (103 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (59), Westmeath (34), Antrim (23) and Monaghan (17).

The average Gavan in 1911 was 31.8 years old, 32.2 for men and 31.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gavan literacy in 1911
Of the Gavans whose literacy was recorded, 76.8% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 21.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gavan common first names
The most common male names were John (26), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (29), followed by Bridget, Anne, Kate and Annie.
Gavan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gavan's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (66) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.3%), general labourer (6.5%), farm labourer (5.3%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.5% of all Gavans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Gavan?
Gavans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.3%) and Presbyterian (0.3%).
