The Gavigans were heavily concentrated in Donegal, home to 55.9% of them (176 people). Next came Westmeath (52), Roscommon (22), Longford (17) and Sligo (11).

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
