Men came out slightly ahead, 93.8% reading and writing against 83.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.5%), shoemaker (3.4%), carpenter / joiner (1.7%) and domestic servant (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.2% of all Gawns, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and building & construction.

Gawns were predominantly Presbyterian (79.3%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (19%) and Non-Conformist (1.7%).
