The 1911 Census recorded 499 people named George in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,800 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 254 men and 243 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was George country: 32.7% of them (163 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (111), Derry (52), Armagh (40) and Dublin (37).

The average George in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.1 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
George literacy in 1911
Of the Georges whose literacy was recorded, 79% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.1% reading and writing against 77.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
George common first names
The most common male names were John (26), James, William, Samuel and Thomas. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Annie, Maggie, Margaret and Sarah.
George occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a George's census form was "Scholar"; 18.8% (94) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.8%), general labourer (4.6%), textile worker (4.6%) and metal worker / engineer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.2% of all Georges, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is George?
The largest religious group among Georges was Presbyterian, at 41.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.1%), Roman Catholic (18.6%), Methodist (5%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.2%).
