The 1911 Census recorded 139 people named Gerety in Ireland; roughly one in every 32,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 77 men to 62 women.

The Geretys were heavily concentrated in Longford, home to 64.7% of them (90 people). Next came Dublin (25), Westmeath (14), Kildare (6) and Derry (2).

The average Gerety in 1911 was 32.1 years old, 31.9 for men and 32.3 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gerety literacy in 1911
Of the Geretys whose literacy was recorded, 73.5% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 20.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 83.1% reading and writing against 65.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gerety common first names
The most common male names were John (18), Thomas, James, Michael and Patrick; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Ellen, Rose, Anne and Bridget.

The most common occupation among Geretys was farmer, 30.2% of them (42 people). Next came scholar / student (11.5%), farm labourer (7.2%), general labourer (2.2%) and medical / nursing (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 37.4% of all Geretys, followed by professional, general labourers and public service & defence.
What religion is Gerety?
Geretys were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12.9%).
