The 1911 Census recorded 313 people named Getty in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 146 men and 167 women.

The Gettys were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 73.8% of them (231 people). Next came Derry (62), Down (17), Dublin (2) and Tyrone (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Gettys whose literacy was recorded, 83.6% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 12.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85% reading and writing against 82.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (20), John, William, Robert and William John. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Jane, Sarah, Maggie and Annie.

The most common entry on a Getty's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (63) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (4.8%), carpenter / joiner (2.9%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.5% of all Gettys, followed by textiles & clothing, building & construction and retail & commerce.
What religion is Getty?
Gettys were predominantly Presbyterian (86.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.8%), Methodist (3.8%), Unitarian (1%) and Baptist (0.6%).
