The 1911 Census recorded 2,927 people named Gibbons in Ireland, about 0.067% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 302nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,462 men and 1,464 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Gibbonses were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 52.2% of them (1,528 people). Next came Galway (283), Donegal (193), Dublin (171) and Tipperary (81).

The average Gibbons in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 28.6 for men and 30.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gibbons literacy in 1911
Of the Gibbonses whose literacy was recorded, 71% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 24.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 72.2% reading and writing against 69.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (229), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (264), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Annie.

The most common occupation among Gibbonses was farmer, 22.7% of them (663 people). Next came scholar / student (20.6%), general labourer (3.1%), farm labourer (2.6%) and domestic servant (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.8% of all Gibbonses, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
