That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Gilchrists whose literacy was recorded, 74.1% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 19.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.3%), farm labourer (6.2%), textile worker (4.2%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.7% of all Gilchrists, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

The largest religious group among Gilchrists was Roman Catholic, at 35%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.9%), Presbyterian (25%), Methodist (3.4%) and Quaker (2.5%).
