Gillin literacy in 1911
Of the Gillins whose literacy was recorded, 81.8% could both read and write, 6.5% could read but not write, and 11.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.3% reading and writing against 80.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Patrick, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (6), followed by Maggie, Annie, Catherine and Delia.

The most common entry on a Gillin's census form was "Scholar"; 20.9% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.8%), seamstress (3.5%), housekeeper (2.3%) and retired / pensioner (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.8% of all Gillins, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Gillin?
Gillins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (4.7%).
