That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gilmor literacy in 1911
Of the Gilmors whose literacy was recorded, 68.3% could both read and write, 15% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75% reading and writing against 61.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), James, Patrick, Thomas and Joseph. For women it was Ellen (4), followed by Sarah, Jane, Lusinda and Agnes Jane.

The most common entry on a Gilmor's census form was "Scholar"; 17.7% (11) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.7%), farm labourer (4.8%), general labourer (4.8%) and textile worker (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.5% of all Gilmors, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and metal & engineering.
What religion is Gilmor?
The largest religious group among Gilmors was Roman Catholic, at 46.8%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (27.4%) and Presbyterian (24.2%).
