That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Girvan literacy in 1911
Of the Girvans whose literacy was recorded, 71.7% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 22.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 72.7% reading and writing against 70.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (21), William, John, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Annie, Catherine, Jane and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Girvan's census form was "Scholar"; 20.3% (75) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.5%), textile worker (5.7%), metal worker / engineer (3.2%) and general labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.1% of all Girvans, followed by textiles & clothing, metal & engineering and domestic service.
What religion is Girvan?
The largest religious group among Girvans was Presbyterian, at 32.7%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (29.5%), Roman Catholic (24.1%), Methodist (12.2%) and Congregationalist (0.5%).
