The 1911 Census recorded 251 people named Glasgow in Ireland; roughly one in every 17,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 118 men and 133 women.

The Glasgows were heavily concentrated in Tyrone, home to 50.2% of them (126 people). Next came Antrim (62), Derry (20), Down (20) and Dublin (12).

The average Glasgow in 1911 was 31.6 years old, 31.4 for men and 31.8 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Glasgow literacy in 1911
Of the Glasgows whose literacy was recorded, 81.1% could both read and write, 5.2% could read but not write, and 13.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Glasgow common first names
The most common male names were James (9), William, David, John and Robert. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Jane, Martha, Rachel and Sarah.
Glasgow occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Glasgow's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (49) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.7%), general labourer (3.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%) and textile worker (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Glasgows, followed by textiles & clothing, professional and general labourers.
What religion is Glasgow?
Most Glasgows, 56.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (16.7%), Plymouth Brethren (9.2%), Roman Catholic (6.8%) and Methodist (3.2%).
