Mayo had the largest share of Goldens, 21.4% (197 people). Next came Sligo (171), Kerry (130), Roscommon (102) and Cork (91).

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (75), Patrick, Thomas, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (70), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Kate.

The most common occupation among Goldens was farmer, 23.4% of them (215 people). Next came scholar / student (17.5%), general labourer (3.9%), farm labourer (3.2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.8% of all Goldens, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Golden?
Goldens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.9%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
