Men came out slightly ahead, 90.9% reading and writing against 82.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Alexander (4), James, John, Robert and Alexander John. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Annie, Sarah, Amy and Caroline.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were carpenter / joiner (11.8%), general labourer (3.9%), retired / pensioner (3.9%) and clerk / office worker (2%). Grouped by sector, building & construction accounted for 13.7% of all Goldies, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retired & pensioners.
What religion is Goldie?
The largest religious group among Goldies was Presbyterian, at 49%. The remainder were mostly Methodist (17.6%), Jewish (15.7%), Anglican (9.8%) and Roman Catholic (7.8%).
