The 1911 Census recorded 5,136 people named Gorman in Ireland, about 0.117% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 150th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,616 men and 2,518 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Gorman in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Gormans, 10.9% (561 people). Next came Antrim (442), Tipperary (400), Laois (254) and Sligo (236).

The average Gorman in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 29.9 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gorman literacy in 1911
Of the Gormans whose literacy was recorded, 75.8% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 19.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.9% reading and writing against 74.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gorman common first names
The most common male names were John (417), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (422), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
Gorman occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gorman's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (999) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.5%), general labourer (5.5%), farm labourer (4.9%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.7% of all Gormans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Gorman?
Gormans were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.6%), Presbyterian (3%) and Methodist (0.7%).
