Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.1%), textile worker (6.6%), general labourer (4.8%) and farm labourer (4.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Gourleys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and transport.
What religion is Gourley?
Most Gourleys, 63.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (20.2%), Roman Catholic (11%), Methodist (3%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.2%).
