The 1911 Census recorded 1,613 people named Grace in Ireland, about 0.037% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 538th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 821 men and 791 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Kilkenny was Grace country: 31.8% of them (513 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Tipperary (268), Dublin (199), Cork (161) and Wexford (127).
Grace average age in 1911
The average Grace in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 30.6 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Grace literacy in 1911
Of the Graces whose literacy was recorded, 81.7% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 14.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.8% reading and writing against 80.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Grace common first names
The most common male names were John (121), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (167), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Kate.
Grace occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Grace's census form was "Scholar"; 18.7% (301) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.6%), general labourer (5.3%), farm labourer (4.6%) and domestic servant (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all Graces, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Grace?
Graces were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.7%), Presbyterian (0.8%), Congregationalist (0.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.3%).
