Of the Graingers whose literacy was recorded, 81.9% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 13.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The largest religious group among Graingers was Roman Catholic, at 37.8%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (30.6%), Anglican (27.1%), Unitarian (3.4%) and Methodist (0.3%).
