Counties with Greaney in Ireland
The Greaneys were heavily concentrated in Galway, home to 57.6% of them (313 people). Next came Kerry (78), Limerick (74), Cork (51) and Dublin (7).

Greaney average age in 1911
The average Greaney in 1911 was 28.6 years old, 28.2 for men and 29.1 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Greaney literacy in 1911
Of the Greaneys whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 21% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.9% reading and writing against 70.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Greaney common first names
The most common male names were John (45), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (56), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Catherine and Kate.

The most common entry on a Greaney's census form was "Scholar"; 26.2% (142) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (22.3%), farm labourer (3.9%), general labourer (2.4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.5% of all Greaneys, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and building & construction.

Greaneys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.1%).
