Green in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 3,204 people named Green in Ireland, about 0.073% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 275th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,583 men and 1,610 women. (A small number, 11, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Green in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Greens, 17.6% (564 people). Next came Dublin (476), Down (411), Donegal (322) and Galway (237).
Green average age in 1911
The average Green in 1911 was 30.3 years old, 28.7 for men and 31.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Green literacy in 1911
Of the Greens whose literacy was recorded, 71.9% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 23.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 73.5% reading and writing against 70.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Green common first names
The most common male names were John (199), James, Patrick, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (208), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
Green occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Green's census form was "Scholar"; 18.9% (607) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.5%), general labourer (5.1%), domestic servant (3.8%) and textile worker (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.5% of all Greens, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Green?
Most Greens, 64.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (22.4%), Presbyterian (4.8%), Methodist (2.8%) and Jewish (1.5%).
