Of the Greers whose literacy was recorded, 81.4% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (143), John, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (93), followed by Annie, Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane.

The most common entry on a Greer's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (485) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.7%), textile worker (5.2%), general labourer (4.3%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.1% of all Greers, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Greer?
The largest religious group among Greers was Presbyterian, at 44.8%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.4%), Roman Catholic (12%), Methodist (4.2%) and Baptist (0.9%).
