Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (9.7%), farmer (7.7%), other maker / factory worker (3.1%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 9.7% of all Gregans, followed by agriculture, domestic service and manufacturing & trades.
